December 1, 2022 — Since the inception of the Carolina Cyber Network (CCN) in 2020, the Carolina Cyber Center (C3) of Montreat College has been honored to work hand in hand with Fayetteville Technical Community College in an initiative to address the lack of cybersecurity talent in the Carolinas. C3 is committed to building the Carolinas’ cybersecurity and developing cybersecurity professionals of character. Being a part of CCN’s vision to work together to fill the talent gap has been an honor, and C3 is thrilled to see incredible progress.
The Carolina Cyber Network began as a vision of Dr. Maurer (President of Montreat College) and Dr. Larry Keen, (President of Fayetteville Technical Community College, and the work of Mark Sorrells (Senior Vice President for Academic and Student Services of Fayetteville Technical Community College, and future President), David Thompson (a trusted consultant), and Adam Bricker and Larry Young (of C3), who saw the need for institutions for higher education to work together to fill the cybersecurity talent gap in North Carolina. The initial partnership between Fayetteville Technical College and Montreat College has now expanded to provide aid or funds to bring each institution up to the standards of the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Excellence (NICE), and provide assistance to become Centers for Academic Excellence (CAE), as awarded by the National Security Agency (NSA).
Not only is the emphasis on partnership continuing to build the CCN as each member provides unique giftings and abilities, but the partnership has an external focus—the flourishing of the Carolinas. “The depth of services and initiatives the CCN has developed in just a few short years is impressive and, with our exceptional member and partner coalitions, will only continue to grow,” said Larry Young, Executive Director of the Carolina Cyber Center. As a unique part of CCN’s focus, the economy of the Carolinas is examined to determine its critical sectors and their unique cybersecurity needs.
All of these efforts have been with the intent to create common cybersecurity education standards and produce cybersecurity professionals with excellent character and practical and technical excellence within their field. The Carolina Cyber Center of Montreat College is excited to continue working to help guide the Carolina Cyber Network as it grows.
